Breakthrough Research in Uniquely Tailored Progams

Graduate students at The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science take part in breakthrough research from their first days on campus in programs designed to meet the particular needs and interests of each individual student.

The school offers several different degrees. The Master of Science program, which usually takes one year to complete, emphasizes specialization but also mandates balance by including basic subjects of broad importance as well as theory and applications. Candidates whose educational background is primarily in pure science may be asked to undertake a course of general studies.

Columbia offers two doctoral degrees in engineering: the Doctor of Engineering Science (Eng.ScD.) and the Ph.D. While the programs are identical in academic requirements, they differ in residence requirements in certain administrative details. The Doctor of Engineering Science is awarded directly by The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Doctor of Philosophy by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

SEAS also offers the M.S. professional degree for students with an undergraduate degree in engineering who wish to do advanced work beyond the level of the M.S. degree but who do not desire to emphasize research.

Qualified persons who are not interested in a degree program but who wish only to take certain courses may be permitted to register as special students, provided facilities are available. Many graduate courses in The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science are offered in the late afternoon and evening in order to make them available to working individuals who wish to further their knowledge in the areas of engineering and applied science.

Individuals who find it difficult or impossible to attend classes on the Columbia campus may be able to receive instruction from the School through the Columbia Video Network without leaving their work sites.
