STORY
Memorial for Morton Klein
Professor
Morton Klein, the Father of the IEOR Department, who
came to the Engineering School as a student more than 50 years ago,
died on April 26 of an apparent heart attack. Family, friends, colleagues,
students and alumni paid tribute to Professor Klein at a memorial
service at St. Pauls Chapel on September 24.
Perhaps Professor Kleins most important legacy is
the mark that he left on our Department as a builder of its faculty
and curriculum and as an inspiring teacher and advisor to thousands
of Columbia students, said Department Chair Donald Goldfarb.
Faculty members spoke of his caring nature, his wise direction
and guidance for students, his concern for the welfare of the
junior faculty, and his reputation as IEORs in-house medical
consultant.
A graduate of Duke University, Professor Klein received the M.S.
and Eng.Sc.D. degrees from Columbia. He began teaching in 1956
and, in 1969, was appointed professor of industrial engineering
and operations research.
The Department has created the Morton Klein Memorial Gift Fund
for attracting and supporting junior faculty, a goal that was
of great importance to Professor Klein. To contribute, send email
to
