Columbia Video Network: Again “Best of the Web”

Forbes Best of the WebFor the third consecutive year, Forbes Magazine has named Columbia Video Network as “Best of the Web” for distance learning. Calling it “a top-notch program, with the bonus of a prestigious name,” the rating continues with superlatives: “The quality of offerings on Columbia University’s Video Network is higher than the usual fare. Targeting engineers, CVN offers six MS degrees and certificate programs in several graduate specialties of engineering. Lectures, course materials, class notes, homework assignments and syllabi . . . online.”

Grace Chung, CVN’s executive director, said CVN students themselves provide the most flattering praise. Jacqueline Tse, who works in the Palo Alto headquarters of Hewlett Packard, said, “The Columbia faculty and staff continuously give speedy support and helpful advice in all areas, from academic to technical support. I found none of its competitors comes close to it.”

More than 70 percent of CVN students view lectures online. CVN’s tri-screen system allows viewers to see the professor while simultaneously viewing slides, images or course notes projected for the students in the classroom. CVN students can access particular slides from a class by using the table of contents provided for each class. Because actual classes are videotaped, distance learning students can hear questions

posed by students on-campus as well as the professor’s response.

“CVN offers flexibility without academic compromise,” said Ms. Chung, “and we are constantly improving the program.”
