A Boat Floats and A Stadium Stands

Columbia’s Solar Splash team won First Prize
in the Endurance Race, First Prize for the Technical Report and
another prize for best team hull in Solar Splash 2003 held in Buffalo,
NY. The catamaran mode is conventional; pontoons mounted under the
hull and a modified lower unit propel the boat forward. Here, Mark
Lang ’03 (mechanical engineering) is coaxing the boat to go
faster.
All Civil Engineering seniors in Christian Meyer’s
Design Projects class worked as a team to prepare a proposal to
develop a stadium at Columbia’s Baker Field that would be
an appropriate venue for hosting Olympic field hockey if New York
City wins its bid for the 2012 Summer Games. The capstone design
project also included modifications of the subway station and traffic
patterns. Shown with the scale model of the stadium are, from left,
Kelly Lawson, Sean Tanner, Emily Pressman, and Julia Lynch.
