SEAS Sees Operas and Concerts
“Our motto this year is SEAS NY - See NY,” says Tom Fazzio ’06,
Engineering Student Council president and advocate of culture for SEAS.
Thanks to Dean Zvi Galil, hundreds of SEAS undergraduate and graduate
students are able to attend some of New York’s premiere performances.
Students register for a lottery that determines who the lucky winners
will be. “Chances of winning are very good, 1 out of 2,” says
Fazzio. “We use an algorithm to sort choices, so about 70% of
the successful lottery winners get their first choice. Broadway shows
are especially popular.” SEAS NY organizers are also working
out a tracking system to give a weighted advantage to students who
did not win a ticket in previous semesters.
This season, tickets will be available to Philharmonic concerts,
Carmen, Tosca, Spamalot, Nutcracker and many other performances. Each
performance is attended by about 20 students, who gather beforehand
to discuss what they will be seeing. “This builds a sense of
community while it allows students to experience a play, opera or ballet
that they could otherwise not afford to attend. New York’s cultural
offerings are one of the great advantages of being at Columbia,” says
Fazzio.
