Named Scholars Thank Their Donors

The festive dinner at The Faculty House

At a festive dinner at The Faculty House, many SEAS students had an opportunity to meet and personally thank the donors who make possible their scholarships to attend Columbia Engineering.

George Schlowsky '65, left, and his wife, Elizabeth Schlowsky, right, flank the two Mark Schlowsky-Fischer '97 Scholars. The Schlowskys endowed a scholarship in their son's name following his unsuccessful year-long battle with Burkitt's lymphoma. Mark was a computer science major and a member of the Columbia marching band and ski team. The Mark Schlowsky-Fischer '97 Scholars are Brittany Bruder '09 and Stephen Robinson '08.
Mary-Elizabeth Michel, right, endowed scholarships in honor of her late husband, Henry Michel '49, former CEO of Parsons Brinckerhoff and winner of the Egleston Medal for Distinguished Engineering Achievement. She is shown here with Ahmet Gursoy, seated left, and standing, left to right, Shinjinee Pathak '08 and Noah Corwin '08, the Michel Scholars, and Dean Zvi Galil.

"Endowed scholarships allow our School to admit the very best and most promising students, without regard to their ability to pay," said Dean Zvi Galil. "They are increasingly important as the School seeks to build an endowment fund that will assure our continued ability to compete with our peer institutions."

Each year, exceptional engineering students are selected for the ranks of named scholars. These students have both impeccable academic records as well as a history of participation in extracurricular activities that range from sports and student government to academic societies and volunteer organizations.

Dr. Stanley Dicker '61, left, who endowed two scholarships in honor of his parents, the Frieda Dicker Scholarship and the Jack Dicker Scholarship, and his wife, Eileen Dicker, chat with Christina Brelsford '07, the Robert Lilley Scholar, and Alexandra Bowen '07, the Richard Hunter Scholar. Cynthia Gao '06, the Jack Dicker Scholar, and Erin George '07, the Frieda Dicker Scholar, were seated with the Dickers for the dinner.
