Following the trend in graduate school admissions nationwide, the Engineering Graduate School has seen a dramatic increase in applications for the next academic year. Now we are about 25% ahead of last years total and we will still receive applications until the end of the summer, said Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services Tom Rock. Thus far, the School has received over 3,700 applications, compared to last years record-breaking total of 2,959. This is the first entire year that we have had online applications, and I think that has made a big difference. It is easy to apply and there is electronic confirmation that the application has been received and is complete, Rock said. Two programs in particular have had significant increases. Our applications to Biomedical Engineering have doubled since last year, he said, and the M.S. in financial engineering continues to be very popular, especially with our domestic students. Biomedical engineering has become popular for a variety of reasons. It is a hot area, with genetics, biomechanics and other cutting edge research, and, since it has become a full-fledged department with outstanding faculty and with the support of the Whitaker Foundation, it has become very visible for any student interested in the field, Rock said. Graduate Student Services has responded to the students request to foster a better sense of community by creating the Engineering Graduate School Council and holding many Grad Student Socials, each attended by more than 300 students, faculty and administrators.
