Columbia Increases Services to Alumni
 |
 |
| Vice President for University Alumni Relations Eric Furda |
 |
Prompted by widespread alumni interest in the University’s
250th anniversary website, University Alumni Relations, in partnership
with Digital Knowledge Ventures (DKV), has launched a new alumni
site, Columbia Connection, at http://alumni.columbia.edu.
The site provides quick access for University alumni to the latest
news, events, and features at Columbia.
“We’ve created a user friendly website that allows
our alumni to reconnect with each other and with Columbia, to find
out more about the services offered by the University and to become
a leader in Columbia Clubs in their own communities,” said
Eric Furda, Vice President for University Alumni Relations. “Right
now we are rebuilding clubs in Colorado, Hawaii, Houston, Nassau
County and Palm Beach. SEAS alumni can help by filling out our survey
on the website,” he said.
A second new alumni service is for engineers. Dean Zvi Galil has
recognized the need to provide continuing career guidance to alumni
and is supporting the Alumni Career Development Department
of the Center for Career Education. The Department’s
director, Deborah Rothstein, a 10-year veteran with the Center,
said, “Alumni Career Development continues the relationship
between Columbia and alumni in developing and managing the lifelong
career education process.”
Through one-on-one counseling, alumni publications, and targeted
alumni programs and workshops, the Alumni Career Development office
will help alumni with career transitions, self-assessment, job search
skills and tools, and career planning. Additional resources include
job postings through Columbiatrak, resume and interview assistance,
career fairs, and access to the Career Resource Center. To meet
with a counselor, please call 212- 854-5498.
“We also need alumni volunteers as panelists, to participate
in networking events, post job and internship opportunities, provide
shadowing and other experiential education opportunities, or serve
as a Columbia champion at their organization,” said Ms. Rothstein.
To volunteer for any of these programs, contact Ms. Rothstein at
der6@columbia.edu.
A third initiative to connect alumni with each other is under the
sponsorship of the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association
(CESAA).
Last month, the Alumni Association began a pilot program to identify
alumni in the financial services industry. Once alumni are identified
and join, they will become part of Financial Services Industry
Group (FSIG). The purpose of the group is to enhance networking,
mentoring, career education, and recruiting opportunities.
Mindful of concerns about privacy with respect to personal information,
Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association President K. Daniel
Libby ’82, ’84 has said that CESAA will not use any
information provided by alumni for any non-FSIG-related communications.
The purpose for having alumni identify themselves as affiliated
with specific industries means that the Alumni Association will
be able to send information on specific industry-based programming
to the appropriate alumni audience.
If this initial effort to work with the financial services industry
group is successful, the Alumni Association will form similar groups
with a specific-industry focus.
