Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register?

All add and drop deadlines are posted on the Academic Calendar.

What are points?

Equal to "credits" at other institutions, one point represents one hour of contact with a professor each week for the length of the term. Most classes are worth three points.

How do I get exempted from purchasing University Health Insurance and the Health Service fee?

The Health Service fee is a mandatory fee that gives students on-campus access to primary care, counseling, health education programs, and other medical services. All students must pay the Health Service fee whether or not they are covered by the University Health Insurance. Students who wish to waive the University Health Insurance must complete and return the waiver form provided in the Guide to Health and Related Services which is mailed to students during the summer before enrollment at Columbia. When the form is received and it is determined that applicants are covered by a comparable medical insurance plan, the provider will take the appropriate action to waive the Columbia health insurance fee.
