Classes of 2020 and 2021 Celebrations

Columbia Engineering is thrilled to recognize the Classes of 2020 and 2021 in-person this May! The Columbia Engineering Celebration for the Classes of 2020 and 2021 will follow the University Alumni Celebration on Thursday, May 19, at 12:30 PM EDT. 

We look forward to celebrating with you!

Check-in: Classes of 2020 and 2021

Roone Arledge Auditorium, Lerner Hall, 11:30-12:30 PM

Arrive with your CUID (if you have one), a government-issued ID, and proof of vaccination. The wearing of academic regalia is strongly encouraged.

You will be given a name card pre-filled with your information. Keep this card with you for the duration of the ceremony

Dress for the weather (South Lawn will not be tented) and limit any additional belongings.

Alumni Procession

After checking in, the Classes of 2020 and 2021 will line up on the ramps of Lerner Hall by 12:55 PM. To sit next to someone during the celebration, you must process directly in front of or behind this person.

Please be courteous of your fellow graduates and their families by remaining in your seats and being attentive throughout the celebration. 

Recession and Reception

Following the ceremony, guests and celebrants are invited to convene at Pupin Plaza for the Columbia Engineering reception.

Check-in: Guests 

114th Street gates, 12:30 PM

Guests should plan to queue up at the campus gates between Broadway and Amsterdam for entry to South Lawn. Seating is first-come, first-served. Guests with disabilities should enter campus at 116th Street and Amsterdam and will queue just inside the gates on College Walk.

All guests will be required to present their electronic ticket to staff to scan upon entry into the tented seating areas. Any guests that arrive without a ticket will not be admitted. All guests must also present proof of vaccination.

Raise Your Hammers!

It's tradition to wave your red hammer proudly in the air as you graduate from Columbia Engineering, and we're excited to have these hammers available for you to pick up prior to Thursday's Celebration!

Health and Safety Guidelines

Columbia University is committed to protecting the health and safety of its community. To that end, all graduates, visiting alumni, and guests must meet the University requirement of full vaccination status in order to attend in-person Commencement events this May. Vaccination cards will be checked upon entry to all outdoor and indoor venues.

Note that this event is dependent on the status of the University's COVID-19 Monitoring Plan.

Who can attend these make-up celebrations?

Engineering graduates whose degrees were conferred in October 2019, February 2020, May 2020, October 2020, February 2021, May 2021, or June 2021 may attend these celebrations and activities. 

How do I register for the Classes of 2020 and 2021 Celebrations?

Registration for the Graduation Celebration for the Columbia Engineering Classes of 2021 and 2020 is now live on MarchingOrder, the official Class Day registration platform! You will receive an email directly from MarchingOrder with a link to confirm your attendance and let us know how your name will be announced as you walk across the stage.

The deadline to register in MarchingOrder is Saturday, April 23 at 5 pm EDT

I am a member of the Class of 2020 or 2021 but I did not receive an email invitation. Am I still invited?

Yes, you are! If you have not received any emails from the Office of Alumni Relations, that means we do not have your correct email address—please update your contact to receive emails and information. To do this, you can update your contact information here, or you may send a note to [email protected] for assistance. 

Is regalia required for Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 celebrations and activities?

At this time, academic regalia will not be required for the University celebration or the SEAS celebration. Only caps are mandatory for the University celebration in the morning and we are still determining requirements for the SEAS celebration. 

Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees: Orders can be placed in-store starting March 8. Online orders may be placed beginning March 14 and ending May 1 to be directly shipped to the student by visiting columbia20202021.shopoakhalli.com.

Doctoral Degrees: Regalia may be reserved in stores from March 8 through April 11th without incurring a late fee. In-store pickup and ship-to-home options are available. Online orders may be placed beginning March 14 and ending April 11 by visiting columbia20202021.shopoakhalli.com. Doctoral rental regalia will be available for pickup in-store beginning May 5. A ship-to-home option is not available online.

How can I make disability accommodations for myself and my guests?

Those requiring accommodations during the Classes of 2020 and 2021 celebrations and corresponding events, including alumni and guests whose disabilities limit their ability to walk or negotiate stairs, should contact Disability Services at [email protected] by Wednesday, May 4. Can I volunteer as an alum for Commencement Week activities?

We welcome alumni to volunteer as Event Hosts for ceremonies held on the Morningside Campus. Event Hosts provide welcoming support and guidance to graduates and their guests attending events on campus from Friday, May 13, through Thursday, May 19.
