In these Hallowed Halls - Alumni Showcase Project
In Summer 2020, The Office of the Provost requested proposals to provide seed grant funding for faculty and/or academic units within the Columbia community that engage with issues of structural racism. The goal of this initiative is to provide resources to enable collaborative dialogue, action, and insight for systemic change toward racial equity.
Engineering DEI answered that call with a proposal to amplify alumni's lived experiences that represent the diversity within our campus community.
NSBE 46th Anniversary Celebration
On Friday, February 23, 2024, Columbia Engineering hosted a day-long celebration commemorating the 46th anniversary of the founding of the University’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The event has been the precursor to a broader effort to enliven the school’s network of Black alumni.
The day featured two distinct panel discussions centered on "Analog to AI" and "NSBE: Origin to Now," welcoming all students and alumni. This was followed by an evening reception at the University's Faculty House. The reception featured remarks from George Ellis BS'79, who is also a member of Columbia Engineering’s Board of Visitors, Greg Tarver BS'78, MS’82, and Fatima Dicko BS'12, past chapter president, who spoke about her own career, sharing experiences from her student journey and professional life.
Founded in 1975, NSBE has expanded to more than 600 chapters nationwide and has continued to carry out its mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community."
