How do head injuries impact the human brain? How does the brain adapt to, and in some cases repair, such trauma? And how can practitioners promote better recovery and help to reduce the prevalence of brain injuries?

Professor Barclay Morrison III.

Renowned brain trauma expert Barclay Morrison III, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia Engineering, will address these questions and discuss his research at a September 17 talk titled, “Heading off Damage: New Insights in Traumatic Brain Injury.” The lecture is part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Brain Insight Lecture Series, hosted by the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University.

Morrison, head of the Neurotrauma and Repair Laboratory, researches the biomechanics of traumatic brain injury and why brain cells die after such trauma to develop better means for preventing injuries and new therapies for treating them. Earlier this year, Morrison and collaborators released a groundbreaking study exploring biological mechanisms that promote recovery of the blood-brain barrier after blast injuries and demonstrating the potential of pharmaceutical therapies for treatment.

Morrison’s talk is free and open to the public. Visit the Columbia Alumni Association website for registration details.
