Professor Adam N. Elmachtoub, Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and member of the Columbia Data Science Institute, is one of two faculty recipients of the Great Teacher Awards presented by the Society of Columbia Graduates.

Elmachtoub received his BS degree from Cornell and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in operations research. His work focuses on designing new approaches for supply chain and revenue management, especially where the two areas collide. He has designed new algorithms for managing inventory and pricing decisions under various complex environments. His research also leverages data to facilitate informed decisions in industries such as retail, logistics, and travel.

Highly rated as a teacher by his students and department, Elmachtoub is recognized by the Society of Columbia Graduates for influencing all key aspects of the undergraduate student experience, including teaching, advising, curriculum development, cultivating research interests, and mentoring research projects. Elmachtoub is a champion of student’s extracurricular endeavors through his supervision of the IEOR student organization, CU Informs, whose mission is to cultivate a strong community of IEOR students through friendship, mentorship, and leadership.

Elmachtoub is joined in his recognition by Columbia College recipient Noam M. Elcott also serves as co-Director of the Columbia Center for Comparative Media, as well as co-Director of the MoMa/Columbia August Sander Project.

Elcott and Elmachtoub are preceded by 2020 winners Rocco Servedio of Columbia Engineering and Farah Jasmine Griffin of Columbia College.
