Will you be holding a summer 2022 program? What are the dates?

The SURE program will begin on May 31, 2022 and will run through August 5, 2022. At present the summer 2022 program is planned to be in-person. However, this will be updated as the situation with the pandemic unfolds and if necessary, a decision will be made to hold the program remotely.

How much is the stipend?

The stipend for 2022 is $600 per week totaling $6,000 for the ten-week program. Additional support will be provided to cover the cost of housing and food (see notes below).

What about housing and food?

Housing and meal plans fully paid by the program will be coordinated and provided on-campus at Columbia University (subject to the public health conditions and university/government policies). If the program is held in person but on-campus residence is not feasible, financial support (about $5,500) will be provided to partly cover the cost of off-campus housing and food. If the program becomes remote, housing and food will not be provided.

What about travel expenses?

Allowable round-trip travel expenses to and from the summer program will be reimbursed up to $500 (“regular” economy-class tickets only) per participant, subject to the Columbia University travel policy. Original receipts must be provided. A travel allowance will not be available if the program is held remotely.

What will I be doing during the program?

You will be working on your research project with your faculty mentors, attending weekly seminar series, touring industry facilities, and interacting with other summer research students and industry mentors. You will also have the opportunity to participate in special cultural and social programs both on and off-campus. SURE program participants will participate in an end-of-summer research symposium.

When is the application deadline?

All complete online applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM on January 30th, 2022

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. Early application is encouraged.

What are the application requirements?

Applicants must complete the online application and personal statement; upload all college transcripts (unofficial is fine), a CV/resume, as well as one letter of recommendation. No prior research experience is required. Students must be entering their junior or senior years of college after summer 2022.

When do I find out if I am accepted?

Applicants will be notified by the beginning of April 2022.

When do I find out what projects I will be working on?

SURE students will be matched after participants have been accepted. We encourage you to read the web pages for our faculty to understand some of the possible opportunities, and let us know if there is an area of particular interest. If you do not know which particular research project interests you, you will be matched with an appropriate mentor where you will gain insight and understanding into the research process and good hands-on experience. You will be notified of your faculty mentor match before the program begins. Each student’s major, research preference, and experience are taken into careful consideration regarding project match.

Are international students allowed to apply?

Unfortunately, we are only able to offer admission to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with DACA status.
