Columbia Engineering Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective summer high school program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. SHAPE is geared toward local students who have demonstrated an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 

Each 3-week session offers college-level courses in engineering, complemented by electives and workshops on topics like public speaking and applying to college.

In courses like Robotics and Autonomous Driving and Biomedical Engineering: Where Biology, Medicine, and Design Meet, you’ll learn from expert faculty and engage in hands-on learning in group-based projects. As a student, you might:

  • Design and build a robotic car,
  • Construct a biomedical device, or
  • Create a physical model of Morningside using state-of-the-art laser cutters and 3D printers.

Engineering the Next Generation

Engineering the Next Generation

Engineering the Next Generation (E.N.G.) is a summer research experience at Columbia Engineering, targeting highly motivated underrepresented high school students from select local partner schools.

During this six-week program, you’ll work with Columbia faculty researchers and graduate students as you participate in a variety of programming to build your academic and professional abilities. You’ll engage in real research, practice new skills, and benefit from multi-level mentoring.

Past participants have contributed to projects involving:

  • Modeling engine emissions
  • Designing collision avoidance systems
  • Spinal cord regeneration techniques
  • Machine learning
  • …and much more

The program includes funding in the form of a stipend to support your work.

Additional Opportunities


S-PREP (State Pre-College Enrichment Program)

This free high school and college preparatory program is designed for 7th - 12th grade students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM fields. 

The purpose of the program is to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students prepared to enter college and improve their participation rate in mathematics, science, technology, health-related fields, and the licensed professions.
