Engineering Graduate Student Council

As a graduate student at Columbia Engineering, your voice matters. The Engineering Graduate Student Council (EGSC) provides a structured way for you to make a real impact, addressing student concerns and implementing student ideas to foster a stronger community and an even better experience for present and future students. Find out more below about the work of EGSC and how you can get involved.

What Does the Engineering Graduate Student Council Do?

EGSC is led by a president and eight other members of the Executive Board and includes a number of representatives from each department. The primary work of the council is overseen by seven committees, which serve and represent engineering students by working in the following areas:

  • Student Affairs Committee

The Student Affairs Committee's responsibilities include maintaining connections with the School and University Administration and raising student concerns to the appropriate parties. The Student Affairs Committee also prepares and conducts the annual student survey, creates a report on the student survey, and organizes and moderates the annual Town Hall meeting where the survey results are made public.

  • Professional Development Scholarship Committee

The Professional Development Scholarship Decision Committee is chaired by the Treasurer. This committee convenes once per semester to decide the winners of each cycle of the Professional Development Scholarship.

  • Social Events Committee

The Social Committee is responsible for coordinating and organizing all student social events, both on- and off-campus, to foster a strong sense of community among Columbia Engineering graduate students. They are responsible for popular events such as the Mid-semester Social, the Carleton Commons Social, and the Boat Cruise, as well as a number of smaller events throughout the semester.

  • Career & Alumni Affairs Committee

The Career and Alumni Affairs Committee is responsible for helping graduate students in terms of building their careers. The committee also bridges the gap between the students and the alumni, by conducting career events like Coffee Chats, Panel Discussions, seminars, etc. This committee works closely with the Graduate Career Placement (GCP) and Professional Development & Leadership (PDL) teams, as well as the student alumni committees: the Columbia Engineering Young Alumni Association (CEYA) and the Columbia Engineering Alumni Association.

  • The Interschool Committee

Columbia Engineering maintains close ties to other schools at Columbia, supported by several cooperative events each year. This committee helps to plan and organize these events, promote interschool cooperation, and foster multidisciplinary relationships and conversations.

Past events have included Social Hour with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Latin Dance Night with the Teacher’s College, and Find Your Founder event with the Business School.

  • Communications Committee

This committee keeps the community informed about the work of EGSC and events in the broader community through a weekly newsletter, social media platforms, and regular interaction with other student groups. They create and share information, helping grad. engineering students be better informed and more engaged.

  • Community Engagement Committee

The Community Engagement Committee supports affinity groups and their members by helping these groups succeed in their respective missions. This committee works closely with the Assistant Dean of Community Engagement and other Community Engagement-focused offices at Columbia Engineering and the University. They are responsible for building a sense of community and fostering communication for all graduate engineering students, regardless of their background.
