Michelle Ashley Capuno

Grants Contracts Officer

Michelle Capuno is an accomplished Grants Contracts Specialist with four years of experience at the Columbia Nano Initiative (CNI), having joined the team in 2017 as a Program Assistant.

In their current role, they provide comprehensive support to CNI faculty in pre- and post-award management, adeptly navigating relationships with diverse government and industry sponsors, including DOD, NSF, DOE, Intel, and SRC. Their exceptional contributions were recognized with a Spot Award in 2021, honoring their creativity and adaptability during the pandemic's challenging periods. Notably, they spearheaded the development of new Excel tracking tools and job aids for online operations, demonstrating their leadership through training initiatives for staff and student workers. Collaborating closely with the CNI Faculty Director, Prof. Keren Bergman, Michelle played a pivotal role in the successful development and financial management of a $35 million cost proposal for SRC JUMP 2.0. This effort culminated in the establishment of the Center for Ubiquitous Connectivity (CUbiC), one of seven nationwide centers, encompassing 14 university subrecipients and 23 co-investigators. Michelle is a proud graduate of Columbia's School of General Studies and holds a Bachelor's degree in Evolutionary Biology of the Human Species. Outside of work, you can find Michelle swinging from a dance trapeze, playing video games, or hanging out with their spouse, Ryan, and their two animals, Lizzy and Lemmy.
