Inter-University Engineering Doctoral Consortium
The Inter-University Engineering Doctoral Consortium (IUEDC) provides eligible Engineering doctoral students the ability to cross-register for graduate-level courses at member schools throughout the greater New York area without additional tuition. Established in 2023, the IUEDC offers students an enormous array of courses and opportunities for contact with faculty and other students in their fields.
Eligibility
The IUEDC is open to doctoral students from participating schools in good academic standing, in
registration years two through seven, and who have obtained explicit approvals from their home and host institution.
First-year doctoral students and terminal master's degree students are not eligible to participate in the consortium.
Registration Deadlines
Spring 2025 IUEDC registration for all students will begin on Monday, December 2, 2024. Participating students in the IUEDC must submit Columbia’s online IUEDC application by February 7, 2025..
Visiting students wishing to drop Columbia classes must do so by March 27, 2025.
Note:
- IUEDC is limited to the fall and spring semesters. Summer semester is not included.
- Class registrations are based on availability and on a first-come-first-served basis.
- Students are responsible for consumable material or other instructional costs, such as lab fees, at their host institutions.
- Courses taken through the IUEDC must be taken for a letter grade or Pass/Fail. R credit and Audit are not permitted. Courses taken Pass/Fail will not count towards degree requirements.

Instructions for Columbia Engineering Students Studying at Another University
Columbia Engineering students request the course(s) they plan to take at the host school by submitting both the IUEDC Registration Form and the Columbia Engineering Online IUEDC Application. Columbia Engineering students are required to register at the host school for any course(s) taken through the consortium. Please review the registration deadlines and academic regulations of the host school.
Please complete the following steps in order:
- Complete all sections of the IUEDC Registration Form (including the “Host School” section). You may leave the home school and host school coordinator signatures blank. After obtaining your advisor’s signature, email your form in a PDF format to [email protected]. The Columbia IUEDC Coordinator will sign after certifying you are an eligible Columbia Engineering doctoral student and that the courses you wish to take at the host school are IUEDC-eligible and available.
- Obtain the signatures of the host instructor and host school IUEDC coordinator. If you receive permission from the host instructor via email, this electronic approval is acceptable in place of a formal signature. Send the host school IUEDC coordinator (listed on the second page of the IUEDC registration form) a PDF of the instructor’s email with your IUEDC Registration Form.
- Submit the Columbia Engineering Online IUEDC Application by the registration deadline listed above. Upload to this online application the IUEDC Registration Form containing all four signatures (i.e., Columbia advisor, Columbia IUEDC coordinator, host school instructor, and host school IUEDC coordinator), as well as a PDF of the instructor’s permission email, if applicable.
- Register with the host school. For instructions, contact the host school IUEDC coordinator, listed on the second page of the IUEDC registration form. The host school may require you to comply with their immunization requirements.
- Obtain an ID card at the host school. You will need to bring either a passport or a state-issued ID. Confirm with the host school whether you will also need to obtain a semester sticker.
- Set up an email account at the host school to ensure that you receive information regarding your course(s) there.
What to expect next:
The Columbia IUEDC coordinator will have the Columbia Registrar’s Office add the respective course(s) to your roster of classes on SSOL once you have submitted the Columbia online IUEDC application with the completed IUEDC registration form.
The host school will send Columbia Engineering your grade(s) after they have been posted in February for the fall semester and June for the spring semester. The Columbia IUEDC coordinator will submit the grade(s) to the Registrar’s Office to be updated in SSOL. Retain the original IUEDC registration form until a grade appears on your transcript.
If you receive an “Incomplete,” or if your grade remains blank or incorrectly listed in SSOL, contact the host school IUEDC coordinator and request that a copy of your transcript be sent to the attention of the Columbia IUEDC coordinator. Be advised that it is your responsibility to ensure any grade changes at the host school are communicated to Columbia Engineering.
