Kerry Mureti Njagi
Kerry Mureti was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and graduated from the renowned Alliance High School. He is interested in innovations and manufacturing, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship. Mureti plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering or environmental engineering in SEAS with a possible minor in entrepreneurship and innovation.
Mureti had the opportunity to engage in research aimed at the removal of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) from wastewater using photocatalytic reactors and titanium dioxide (TiO2) components. Together with his research team, they meticulously selected representative wastewater treatment sites across Kenya for their experiments. They conducted extensive site characterization to assess the composition of EDCs in these locations, taking into account variations in wastewater sources and treatment processes. The adapted photocatalytic systems have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in removing EDCs from local wastewater streams.
Beyond research, Mureti’s benevolence pushed him to volunteer in an underserved slum school during his gap year. During this time, Mureti taught in Edelvale Primary School in Kayole slum. He managed to impact over 500 children especially in STEM related subjects. Over 4 months he managed to teach Math, Physics, Science, and social studies. Moreover, Mureti served as the team leader of Edelvale’s volunteer group. Together, they encouraged literacy through Teaching at The Right Level (TaRL) sessions. Mureti and his team also managed to conduct projects and education motivational talks that had a positive impact on the children’s attitude towards education.
In high school, Mureti was an ever present figure. He served as a leader throughout his 4 years and was part of various clubs. Notably, he served as a form representative for about 450 students where he represented their claims and interests to the administration. In his junior and senior year, Mureti was his dorm’s Chairperson and an Entertainment captain, leading over 1800 students. Additionally, he served as a Peer Counselor and was part of the Social Welfare Society.
In his free time, Mureti enjoys listening to music, playing fifa, playing rugby, spending time with his friends, and learning new things especially in engineering. He looks forward to exploring and growing his interest at Columbia and thriving in the world’s greatest city!
