Engineering Graduate Student Council

As a graduate student at Columbia Engineering, your voice matters. The Engineering Graduate Student Council (EGSC) provides a structured way for you to make a real impact, addressing student concerns and implementing student ideas to foster a stronger community and an even better experience for present and future students. Find out more below about the work of EGSC and how you can get involved.

What Does the Engineering Graduate Student Council Do?

EGSC is led by a president and eight other members of the Executive Board and includes a number of representatives from each department. The primary work of the council is overseen by seven committees, which serve and represent engineering students by working in the following areas:

  • Academic Affairs Committee

This group takes responsibility for educational issues and student interaction with faculty and administrators. They gather student concerns, in part through the annual student survey, envision solutions, and advocate for students by bringing issues before the administration.

  • Budget Committee

They handle the money. That includes reviewing budget proposals from recognized student organizations, allocating funds for EGSC events, and carefully documenting all spending.

  • Social Events Committee

This team coordinates and organizes all student social events both on-campus and off-campus to foster relationships and growth. They are responsible for popular events like the Mid-semester Social, Carleton Commons Social, and the Boat Cruise, plus a number of smaller events throughout the semester.

  • Career & Alumni Affairs Committee

The Career and Alumni Affairs Committee helps grad students build their careers and forge connections with alumni by conducting career events like Coffee Chats, panel discussions, seminars, etc.

  • The Interschool Committee

Columbia Engineering maintains close ties to other schools at Columbia, supported by several cooperative events each year. This committee helps to plan and organize these events, promote interschool cooperation, and foster multidisciplinary relationships and conversations.

Past events have included Social Hour with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Latin Dance Night with the Teacher’s College, and Find Your Founder event with the Business School.

  • Communications Committee

This committee keeps the community informed about the work of EGSC and events in the broader community through a weekly newsletter, social media platforms, and regular interaction with other student groups. They create and share information, helping grad students be better informed and more engaged.

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

The DEI committee supports affinity groups in their respective missions, acts as a liaison with the Dean of DEI and other DEI-focused offices at Columbia, advocates for the interests of underrepresented minorities, and seeks to build a stronger community among all students at Columbia Engineering.
