What Is Mentorship? Why does mentoring matter?
Mentorship is a partnership between a more experienced individual (the mentor) and a less experienced individual (the mentee). A strong mentorship can benefit both parties and support educational, career, and personal growth.
As a mentor, your impact extends far beyond a single conversation or check-in.
First, you’re sharing career insights.
Many of our students are just beginning to explore potential career paths and may be navigating professional environments for the first time. Others are further along, continuing to build experience and refine their interests. Your insights offer them a real-world perspective into your field, your career journey, and the choices that have shaped it. What you share can spark ideas and help them understand the many directions a Columbia degree can take them.Second, you’re modeling professional behavior.
By being present, listening actively, and communicating clearly and thoughtfully, you’re modeling the kind of professionalism students are expected to emulate in their internship, research, or volunteer opportunity. The way you manage time, offer feedback, or even how you handle challenges teaches them valuable skills. And finally, you’re providing a supportive network.
As you know, at Columbia, our students are driven and ambitious, but they still benefit deeply from encouragement, affirmation, and connection. Your presence sends a powerful message: that Columbia alumni care, believe in their potential, and are willing to invest their time to help them succeed. That kind of support can be transformative.

I’m a recent grad. How can I benefit from the Blueprint Mentorship Program?
Recent graduates and young alumni (those who earned their most recent Columbia Engineering degree within the past 10 years) can use the Blueprint Mentorship Program to stay connected with the Columbia Engineering community while receiving valuable guidance as they navigate the early stages of their careers. Through Blueprint, you can connect with experienced alumni who provide advice on job searches, graduate school, networking, workplace transitions, and more.
The CEYA Mentor Match connects current Columbia Engineering undergraduate students and undergraduate young alumni in a semester-long, 1:1 mentoring relationship. Alumni offer guidance on academics, internships, and career decisions, while students gain encouragement and insights from those who have recently navigated the transition to post-grad life.

What is the expected time commitment?
The Blueprint Mentorship Program is designed to be flexible. You can engage in a variety of ways—from long-term mentoring relationships to brief, informal conversations. Blueprint helps facilitate Flash Mentoring, which typically involves a one-time interaction such as an informational interview, mock job interview, or short conversation, often lasting about an hour. We recommend connecting via phone or video call, as these are often easiest to schedule. You can set and share your availability directly through your profile.
