Daniz Mammadzada is from Shaki, Azerbaijan. At Columbia, she plans to study Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics.

Growing up with doctor parents, Daniz’s interest in healthcare started at a young age. Later, as she became fascinated by mathematics, she decided to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering, a field that bridges her interests. She conducted her first research on medical imaging technologies, investigating the potential application of cavitation phenomena for cancer diagnosis. Her research project was a two-time finalist at the “Scientist of the Future” Republican Competition, an ISEF-affiliated science fair. Later, Daniz’s interest in medical sciences was strengthened after completing a year-long internship at the Clinical Laboratory department of Bonum Medical Clinic.

In high school, Daniz engaged in different competitions and community initiatives. She earned a bronze medal at the National Mathematical Olympiad, becoming the first medalist of her region in the last decade. Additionally, Daniz was selected as one of 17 members of the United Nations Youth Advisory Council in Azerbaijan, where she collaborates with other members to advise the United Nations in Azerbaijan on integration of youth voices and perspectives into UN’s strategies and programmes. Daniz also enjoys playing piano, chess, and trivia games.

Throughout her journey at Columbia, Daniz aims to work on innovative solutions for global healthcare problems by exploring her interests in depth and developing to be a scholar.
