Hyoseon Sophia Lee

Lecturer in the Discipline of Professional Development and Leadership in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research

Hyoseon Sophia Lee is a lecturer in discipline of Professional Development and English Communication as a Second Language in the engineering school at Columbia University.

She earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering, BA in Chinese and English Linguistics, MA in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), and a PhD in Foreign, Second, and Multilingual Language Education. Her research interests include second language writing anxiety, affective domains in second language learning, language learning in higher education, English for specific purposes, and English for professional development. She teaches English communication courses for international graduate students in engineering departments: English Workplace Communication, Professional Presentation in English, English Pronunciation, and Academic Writing courses. 

Hyoseon has extensive teaching experience with both K-12 students and adults. Prior to joining Columbia, she taught Academic Composition courses for undergraduate and graduate students in the ESL program at the Ohio State University from 2013-2017. She taught English and Chinese in K-12 settings in Korea and the US: she taught Chinese to English/Korean speakers and English to speakers of other languages. She is interested in teaching and learning cultures and languages and has a passion for helping people enjoy learning languages and improve their English proficiency to show their abilities fully in English.
