Edvard Tovmasyan

Meet Edvard, a bright mind from Yerevan, Armenia, currently navigating his way through the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as a freshman and Egleston Scholar. Edvard grew up in Yerevan and attended High School 139 after Karen Demirchian, where he was known for his active involvement in science contests, olympiads and competitions.

Edvard participated in the National Science Festival of Armenia during his junior year. There, he presented his research paper on the topic of "Quantum Computers and Neuralink," conducting experiments with the betta version of IBM's quantum computer. His efforts were recognized with an award for his scientific experiment. It marked the beginning of a promising scientific journey, as later that year, he also won the Mathematics Olympiad organized by the Armenian State Pedagogical University.

In his senior year, Edvard and his classmate took the spotlight at the National Science Festival. Their project, "Walk - Move - Charge: Piezoelectric Shoes to Generate Electricity," not only secured victory at the festival but also propelled them to become finalists at the world’s largest pre-college science competition - Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2022 (ISEF). Thanks to the collaboration with the National Science Academy of Armenia, Edvard and his partner virtually participated in ISEF 2022, clinching the American Statistical Association Special Award.

Now, as a fresh face at Columbia, Edvard’s intended major is Computer Science. His goal is to seamlessly blend his passion for advanced technologies, innovation and artificial intelligence, all with the aim of crafting practical solutions to humanity's current problems. Edvard envisions a future where technology contributes to making the world a better and safer place for everyone.
