Recruitment for this position is part of a broad university-level Quantum Initiative that spans multiple schools and departments across Columbia University in the City of New York. Applications are sought in all areas of quantum science and technology covering both theoretical and experimental aspects. Areas of interest include novel physical phenomena, electronic/photonic materials, devices, circuits and integrated systems for quantum communications, computing, sensing, metrology, and theoretical aspects of quantum information processing, including detection and estimation, error-correction coding, machine learning, and optimization.
We are seeking researchers who can benefit from the highly multidisciplinary environment and the state-of-the-art shared facilities/infrastructure within Columbia University such as the Columbia Nano Initiative and the Data Science Institute. The candidate is expected to hold a full or joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, or Mechanical Engineering and is expected to contribute to the advancement of their field, the Department(s), and the School by developing an original and leading externally funded research program, establishing strong collaborations in research and education with related disciplines such as Physics and Chemistry, and contributing to the undergraduate and graduate educational mission of the Department(s) and the School. APAM is a highly multi-disciplinary department investigating fundamental math, physics, and materials science problems underlying critical applications in science and engineering ranging from Plasma/Fusion physics to Climate dynamics.
For this search, the Department seeks candidates with research interests in plasma physics, particularly those emphasizing applications to pressing societal challenges. Examples of applications can include but are not limited to: fusion energy, electric propulsion, materials processing, and microelectronics.
While candidates at the junior level are preferred, exceptional candidates at the tenured Associate Professor or Professor levels will also be considered.
Qualifications

A broad array of research groups is active in the department, with current research encompassing applied and computational mathematics, and their application to many areas of physics, materials science, biology, earth science, as well as imaging and data science.
There is a strong cohort of activities on applied and computational mathematics within the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the affiliated Data Science Institute. Applications are specifically sought in the areas of Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical development. Research emphasizing the design and development of therapeutics, from small molecules to biologicals to cell-based therapies, as well as the biomanufacturing of therapeutics, including cellular engineering, bioprocess design, automated processing, and bioseparations are encouraged. We also encourage research emphasizing the development of biocompatible materials for therapeutic delivery and regenerative medicine, and computational and AI approaches in biomolecular and bioprocess engineering. We wish to highlight that there is a new Columbia Initiative in Cell Engineering and Therapy (CICET) at the Columba University Irving Medical Center, and intersections with the Medical School are of particular interest.

These are full-time, non-tenure-track faculty roles designed to meet instructional needs in specialized fields.
